The seventeen Bete masks presented at BRAFA belong to a corpus of still little known traditional African arts. These astonishing works express impressive power with concision and inventiveness. Their lines are harmonious and the architectural composition of their volumes gives these fantastic faces a strong three dimensional structure. This is a unique form in African art. In their original context, the masks were intended to inspire fear and respect. By their presence, these incarnations of super-human beings remind of the profound mysteries of nature and existence. The impression their creators sought to make still remains.
